Will Viagra (Sildenafil) Give You A Heart Attack?

Dan Bilzerian, bearded internet playboy, poker champ and someone who definitely doesn’t employ a coterie of Instagram models to hang out with him, can pin much of his fame on A) his proximity to semi-naked women B) almost-but-not-really being a Navy SEAL and C) his story about having a cocaine and Viagra induced double heart attack.

This wild tale – which included marathon binge-drinking, snowboarding, cocaine, strippers, general debauchery and Viagra – was originally told in his now notorious interview — but is this all true? Who knows. Either way, it garnered Dan some of that sweet, sweet internet clout, and fuelled the belief that the little blue pill (also known as Sildenafil) can result in a heart attack.

The cocaine certainly had a lot more to do with his purported heart attack than the Viagra. However, we’ll give Bilzerian a pass as Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) is historically tied to conditions involving the heart.

When Pfizer scientists first started researching the drug 30 years ago, they were originally looking to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina, a type of chest pain caused by restricted blood flow. During clinical trials, the team discovered the biochemical mechanism triggered by Sildenafil had something of a universal effect on the body’s organs, allowing blood to flow easily to not only the heart, but also the penis.

Therefore, Viagra and Sildenafil are highly unlikely to cause a heart attack. In fact, quite the opposite, it actually helps dilate blood vessels constricted by coronary artery disease.

Having said that, Sildenafil should not be used if you are already taking nitrates for heart health, as the two medications could drastically lower your blood pressure.

Similarly, there are a few preexisting conditions that mean you shouldn’t take Sildenafil, which is why we require you to undergo a consultation before starting treatment to ensure it’s appropriate for you.

The takeaway is simple. Don’t mix Sildenafil with mountains of cocaine. Don’t mix any drug with cocaine. Actually, just don’t do cocaine. Please.

And don’t worry, whether it’s branded Viagra or its more cost effective unbranded counterpart Sildenafil, you’re in safe hands. Your heart can keep on happily pumping while your erection worries are solved.
