A Doctor’s View On Hair Loss Medication

Much like long-term relationships and bungee-jumping, when it comes to medication, trust is everything.

While hair loss treatments have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, you still want to know that whatever you’re putting into your body or rubbing into your scalp is going to be both safe and effective.

Trust is important to us too. That’s why we built our entire hair service around the opinions of medical experts, who are on hand to offer personal consultations to anyone seeking a treatment plan with us. We always defer to them when it comes to the hows, whys and whens of hair loss medication.

Every medical professional we work with champions two clinically-proven treatments above all others: Finasteride and Minoxidil. Which is why Finasteride (taken in pill form), and Minoxidil (sprayed onto the scalp), form the backbone of the treatments we offer.

Here, according to the experts, is why…

Firstly, they work!

When it comes to treating male pattern baldness – the most common cause of hair loss – you want a treatment that has worked for other people, right? Well the biggest reason for recommending both Finasteride and Minoxidil is how effective they are.

Finasteride was first introduced to the UK in pill form in 2002, and since then it’s become a hugely popular treatment. Studies have shown nine out of ten men to experience the benefits of Finasteride. The results of three five-year studies, conducted with nearly 6,000 patients in total, showed that hair loss was halted in 90% of men, with 77% of them actually increasing their hair growth during treatment.

Minoxidil has a similarly sterling reputation. A study tracking patients using a 5% Minoxidil formula – the highest strength version of the treatment available – found 60% of them experienced increased scalp coverage after 48 weeks of use. Granted it takes a little patience, but the results speak for themselves, and have done time and time again.

They get to the root of the problem

Unlike hair transplants which seek to fill the space on your scalp with hair from elsewhere, our treatments aim to combat the causes of hair loss. In most cases (a whopping 95%) this means tackling male pattern baldness.

MPB is a result of a hormone called DHT. The body starts producing more DHT during puberty, which in some men has the effect of weakening their hair follicles. Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT, giving the follicles a better chance of survival and in some cases encouraging the growth of new hair.

Minoxidil works slightly differently, but similarly targets the cause rather than the outcome. In simple terms, it expands the blood vessels in your scalp, improving the blood flow to the follicles. This means they get all the oxygen and nutrients they need, reversing the shrinking effects of MPB.

They’re also clinically proven

This is a really important one. The landscape of hair loss treatments can be something of a Wild West at the best of time, and our consultants aren’t interested in bogus remedies based on phony science.

Finasteride and Minoxidil are the only two FDA-approved treatments for male pattern baldness available. That means they are the only treatments to have undergone the rigorous testing of America’s Food and Drug Administration and come out the other side with a big fat tick. Accept no substitutes!

Side effects are understood and limited

All medicines can cause side-effects. Finasteride and Minoxidil are no different. Thankfully, due to countless medical tests we have a decent understanding of these potential adverse results.

For example Finasteride can, in a small number of people, cause dizziness, weakness, and potential swelling in the hands and chest. Links have also been drawn between Finasteride and erectile dysfunction. But thanks to extensive testing we know that cases of Finasteride affecting sexual performance are both rare and reversible. (According to a study analysed by the NHS, involving 17,000 cases, only 1.4% of men who took Finasteride had persistent erectile dysfunction after they had stopped the drug.)

Minoxidil, is also one of the safest ways to combat hair loss. Dizziness, light-headedness, headaches and chest pain have only been reported in a rare few cases – usually due to over-application.

Whatever happens, we’re on hand

The best part is our consultants are on hand, before and during your treatment. If you’ve got any questions or concerns – from how long it will take, to which shampoo to use – we’ve got your back.

Finasteride and Minoxidil are tried and tested treatments that have proven both successful and hugely popular. But they’re only as good as the people recommending them. Our hair loss treatment plans are devised by medical professionals to suit your individual needs, so you know what you’re getting will be safe and suitable.

We trust our treatments, so you can trust us!
